Flying Start to Literacy Levels 1 to 30

Give your students a flying start to literacy and make Flying Start to Literacy the core of your literacy resources.
Young readers love to read Flying Start to Literacy® books.
There are 168 books in the program. There are fascinating things to learn about, funny stories to laugh at, exciting adventure stories, reports, interviews, instructions on how to do and make things and plays. Dramatic photographs and great illustrations support all of the books.
Flying Start to Literacy® includes chapter books. All books at Levels 18 to 30, both fiction and non-fiction, are presented in chapter book format. Young readers can read Flying Start to Literacy books with success because the program supports developing readers. High frequency words and key content words are introduced systematically and revisited in following levels in the program. This develops the readers’ ability to recognise and use these words, and supports reading and comprehension.
Each book is part of a pair. A fiction book and a non-fiction book present the same key concepts and vocabulary and allow beginning readers to develop a range of different reading strategies.
Every book has been read by readers who are at the appropriate reading level. Running records of each reading have provided information for shaping and modifying each text.
The program supports a systematic approach to the development of phonemic awareness and phonics. All new vocabulary is phonically accessible to developing readers.
As a teacher you will find Flying Start to Literacy easy to use and appreciate the range of supportive teacher resources.
The Lesson Plans integrate oral language, vocabulary development, fluency and comprehension, writing and phonics. They are attractive, durable, accessible and easy to store.
Supportive resources for planning and record keeping are available on-line:
• assessment checklists to identify strategies to be monitored for each title
• scope and sequence charts to identify reading strategies and new high frequency and content words in each title
• reading across the curriculum checklists to identify cross curriculum links and specialist content vocabulary.

What teachers are saying about Flying Start to Literacy:
"Having paired books, fiction and non-fiction, is invaluable. Students at the beginner stage do not get enough
exposure to non-fiction texts and this helps to address this. Reading the non-fiction first gives the students
the vocabulary and context they need to engage fully with the text. The fiction text is also a second check
point that the students understand the vocabulary and context, as well as checking that they can transfer
information from one context to another. Excellent!" Mal Cameron, Teacher, Prospect North Primary School
"I use most of the ideas from the Flying Start "Lesson Plans" especially comprehension, writing, word work,
developing fluency and the Blackline Masters." Carol Berryman, Teacher
